SURREAL FOLK & COSMIC AMERICANA FROM THE HIGH DESERT
“Like sonically swimming through a painting. ”
Ben Guihan is a visual songwriter, portraying surreal images and characters that come to life in cinematic verses, matched with a colorful guitar style ranging from acoustic folk to western psychedelic Americana. His music draws much influence from the work of the beat generation, the Greenwich Village folk revival, as well as Rembrandt, Dali and early southern California country rock.
Ben almost always performs solo accompanying himself on guitar, casting dream-like images throughout the room as he switches between a parlor style acoustic guitar and a Danelectro twelve string. His sets evolve freely from road songs to celestial ballads. Guihan invites the listener to into a rich landscape of incandescent shadows, reimagined mythology, neon folk songs and glittering towns in a distant night.
Ben grew up in Vermont, where he studied theater. After leaving his home town Ben travelled extensively in a homemade wooden camper built onto the back of a '94 Ford Ranger. Playing and writing music as he went, eventually relocating to the high desert of Taos, New Mexico, which he now calls home. He continues to preform throughout the west, including at several folk festivals and other local festivals. When not on the road, by day you can find Ben hand crafting custom bespoke hats at Six Hand Hats on Taos Plaza, and in the evenings playing music locally in one of Taos’s many venues. Ben has recorded several albums and EPs over the years, which are available on all streaming services. His most recent full length record Mise-en-scène, is also available on vinyl.
